Keith Darmanin started training Japanese Ju-Jitsu in 1993 at 14 years of age. His instructor, Sensei John Sevasta, was also a Judo black belt thus sessions consisted of both traditional Ju-Jitsu techniques and also stand up and ground-work randori. In 1997 he saw the first editions of the UFC where he learnt about Gracie Jiu-Jitsu and later he trained BJJ with a purple belt under Master Pedro Sauer. Apart from BJJ and Ju-Jitsu experience, he has a vast knowledge of Judo since he also cross trained in Judo at a young age and was also training with the Maltese Judo National Team. In 2008, he started his own club and in 2009 he met Mestre Rogerio Olegario in Italy, from whom he got promoted to Blue Belt. Consequently he founded Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Team Malta. Keith Darmanin is the first ever Maltese to achieve a grade in BJJ. Today he heads BJJ Team Malta and is the first Maltese to receive the prestigious rank of BJJ Black Belt. He is also the only Maltese to win medals in international BJJ competitions in all belts, ie. Blue, Purple, Brown & Black.
